Client Context & Background
The client, a top 10 UK legal firm, was spending over £13 million annually on Microsoft Azure after migrating 80% of its systems to the cloud between 2022 and 2024. However, without a structured approach to cloud spend governance, significant inefficiencies had developed over time without visibility. While the firm planned a major re-architecture in 2025 once migration was complete, its IT team of around 300 employees, supported by third-party partners, struggled to manage costs effectively in the meantime.

Within just three weeks, the engagement identified 43% in potential savings, including 16% that could be realised immediately by addressing orphaned resources and optimising virtual machines without any design changes. A further 27% was achievable within three months through rightsizing and re-tiering. To ensure lasting impact, KPI dashboards were created for leadership to track progress, and a FinOps maturity assessment was conducted to establish a long-term savings and governance strategy.

The engagement began with a Cloud Cost Allocation Audit to understand which resources were being used, their purpose, and who was accountable for them. Using Optimus, the team analysed around 27,000 Azure resources in less than 48 hours, producing detailed insights that guided next steps. A tailored KPI dashboard was then developed to give leadership visibility into key cost drivers, while a FinOps maturity assessment outlined the broader capabilities required for long-term governance and optimisation. Finally, a tagging strategy was published for the engineering team to ensure accurate allocation and ongoing cost transparency.
